Tomei Releases (2) Versions Of The Expreme Ti For The 2022+ VB WRX

    25 JAN 2024 - Jeff Willis

It has been a little over two years since the release of Subaru’s VB version of the WRX. Behind the controversial skin was still an AWD rally-inspired sedan that still represents all the WRX DNA. Out of the new 2.4-liter design, Subaru managed to generate 271 HP and 251 LB-FT of torque out of this boxer engine. And despite modern times where we have lightning-fast automatic transmission options, Subaru still satisfies enthusiasts with a 6-speed manual transmission option. At a price starting at a little over $29,000 for the base model, you get a turbocharged all-wheel-drive vehicle where many new manufacturer options are priced out of range for the average consumer especially during a hesitant economy. In terms of a traditional rear-wheel drive manually shifted sports car, the Subaru BRZ is on top of its class. But a car you can mod and drive all year long, the VB WRX is one heck of a bargain.

When the 2022+ VB WRX started making waves, the aftermarket went into overdrive to be the first to get their hands on one for R&D purposes. Many companies raced to be the first to offer the basic performance upgrades for the VB WRX. This included the intake, tuning options, but especially the exhaust options. For those of you who may be new to tuning and upgrades as new owners of the Subaru WRX, Tomei had just released their Expreme Ti Cat-Back Exhaust for the VB.

In 1968, the founder of Tomei, Seiichi Suzuki launched the company to develop performance products to remain competitive against other drivers in Japan’s local racing circuit. Several decades later, Tomei established both successes along with a rich heritage in their racing program to provide customers with the same racer-winning formula. Today, with the most technologically advanced tooling and manufacturing methods in the development processes, the same practices, and routines of what improves power and performance will always remain as it did 55 years ago.

TOMEI EXPREME TI CAT-BACK EXHAUST OPTIONS FOR THE 2022+ SUBARU WRX

Although there are several options available for the VB WRX, there are only a few options made from full titanium construction. Many of you will be familiar with the Expreme Ti options for many other makes and models, and SubiSpeed is proud to provide you with the same quality and craftsmanship for the latest WRX model to add more horsepower, more torque, with a reduction in weight. You get two options from Tomei which is the Type R, and the Type D version. For now, let’s rediscover the main benefits of the Expreme Ti Cat-Back Exhaust System.

    FULL TITANIUM CONSTRUCTION

The main feature of Tomei’s Expreme Ti line is that they are fully fabricated using premium-grade titanium materials. Compared to most cat-back options for the VB WRX, this will be one of the lightest options available. Now titanium is by means not cheap, the labor involved to craft these exhaust systems rightfully will justify the value. But it is versatile in terms of being highly effective for those of you who are building a purpose-built race car and need to save as much weight as possible, and it is aesthetically pleasing for those of you with a show car, or a daily driver. Furthermore, titanium exhaust systems produce an exhaust note throughout the entire RPM range that is unique when compared to conventional 304 stainless steel exhaust systems.

    JDM PIE CUTS

This is where the fabrication process must be precise for fitment because the galling process for titanium has a threshold before it splits. Therefore, the method of cutting is preferred to maintain the structural integrity of the piping. Now stainless steel is much easier to bend with mandrel methods, but the pie cuts were standard practices in the JDM racing circuit for decades. Very labor-intensive and time consuming, however the result is an artistic reflection of hard work involved whether it be on exhaust, intake, or intercooler piping. The same method is used on all Tomei Expreme Ti systems that reflect the build quality, craftsmanship, and the performance.

    PERFORMANCE

Because titanium can be on the challenging side to position and weld, the bends need to be as straight as possible. This allows the turbocharger to have an uninterrupted flow path to allow the exhaust gases to quickly escape. With the lack of turbulence, you get an increase in horsepower, torque, and you get a baster throttle response due to the reduction in turbo lag. Furthermore, the 25+lb weight savings are a great help when compared to the stock cat-back system as it is the most efficient means of shedding the pounds without having to remove interior bits or other components to save weight.

Now for the VB WRX, Tomei has (2) options available to choose from. There is a single exit setup and a dual exit setup. Let’s look at both options:
