RP-X: Built for Peak On-Track Bite

EBC Racing is upfront that RP-X was developed for peak on-track performance, which means higher levels of brake dust and brake noise should be expected compared to a street-oriented compound. RP-X has disc wear comparable to many other popular track and race materials, though it runs considerably higher than EBC's other track pad, RP-1, which is the tradeoff for its more aggressive bite. Compared to RP-1, RP-X delivers a 25 percent increase in friction coefficient across its working temperature range along with a much more positive initial bite. That characteristic makes RP-X particularly well-suited to heavy or inherently under-servoed vehicles that need every bit of stopping power they can get.

Choosing Between RP-X and RP-1

For light-to-medium weight vehicles, cars without an EBC Big Brake Kit fitted, or vehicles with no ABS, the less aggressive nature of EBC's other track material, RP-1, may actually be the more manageable choice. RP-X's extra bite is a genuine advantage on a heavy car or one that's under-braked relative to its weight, but that same aggression can make a lighter car feel snatchy or overly sensitive at the pedal. Matching the compound to your specific car's weight and brake hardware matters more here than defaulting to whichever pad sounds more aggressive. That's worth keeping in mind whether you're upgrading proactively or replacing a worn part.
