It’s been 16 years since the debut of the 2004 Subaru STI, and for 2020, the heart of the engine remains as the EJ25, or EJ257 to be specific. Yet we have learned so much about this platform in terms of what are the strong points, and mainly what are the weak points. Like any turbocharged performance vehicle, the key ingredients to more bolt-on power are the basic power upgrades such as an intake and an exhaust system, fuel upgrades to supplement the power, and a proper tune to make sure everything is leveled out so that your ECU is happy throughout the entire RPM range.

Yet none of these upgrades are relevant if you don’t take care of the other supporting modifications. We have learned in all Subaru boxer engines how important an Air Fuel Separator is. In your stock PCV system, oil and vapors will coat your intake valves, cylinder walls, and piston tops with carbon that lowers your gasoline octane ratings. This leads to detonation issues as a lower octane reading creates a leaner condition. Make sure that you upgrade your turbo inlet hose because the OEM rubber inlet hose will crack and/or tear because of the multiple heat cycles and engine vibrations. Our selection features multi-layer silicone construction that is much stronger. And speaking of engine vibrations, your OEM pitch stop is prone to breaking. Anytime you perform engine upgrades that increase the torque will also increase the engine movement. A COBB Tuning Pitch Stop is made using stronger materials and construction to provide you with long-lasting performance. These upgrades should be performed right off the bat once these cars rolled out of dealerships. If not, now is a good time to do so.
