After the great success of the Blobeye and Hawkeye Subaru WRX and STI models from 2002-2007, Subaru took a different angle and designed a hatchback/wagon model for the next-generation STI. This was a great leap of faith that resonated very well with AWD enthusiasts, and Subaru offered a slightly toned-down version for the WRX. Now for the 2009 WRX, a redesigned sedan option was released as well, and the engine received slight revisions to the intercooler and intake manifold. It produced 224 HP where peak power and torque were delivered sooner in the RPM range, and you still had both 5-speed manual and automatic versions. Owners liked to perform cat-back upgrades such as the Invidia Q300 to gain more power and sound, and just like any Subaru boxer engine, an air/oil separator is a must-have, and examples such as the Killer B Motorsport Air Oil Separator prevented oil from entering the intake. But it’s not always about power with the 2009 WRX. After all, it still has that rally DNA which meant that this all-wheel-drive platform handled well with Whiteline’s Front and Rear Swaybar Kit. With just a few engine and suspension mods, the 2009 WRX is a great platform that enthusiasts still enjoy to this day.
