2006 Subaru WRX STI Mods and Upgrades
WRX STI Upgrades by WRX STI Experts.
After major success for the first-generation USDM STI models for 2004 and 2005, Subaru knew that they didn’t really get off the path of where the previous Blobeye (2004-2005) generation went. So they made minor alterations that were mainly noticeable on the exterior. The new headlight design for 2006 models became sharper which earned the GD chassis code (2004-2007) nickname, Hawkeye. The hood still inherited the larger intercooler scoop but as Mitsubishi and Subaru kept close eyes on each other, the Evo and the STI had their own versions of the rear vortex generator. These would be the small fins mounted where the rear roof meets the rear window on the Evo models, and what would look like a small ski rack mounted on the rear of the 2006 STI. And these were designed to channel the air coming over the roofline so that it makes direct contact with the rear spoiler. The result was increased aerodynamic refinement at higher speeds.
The interior kept that cool blue Alcantara theme, while the EJ25 remained as the heart of the powertrain. But after two years, it had been discovered that the OEM top mount intercooler was a weak point prone to heat soak. Enthusiasts would result to mods such as a Process West Top Mount Intercooler with a Turbosmart Plumb Back Blow-Off Valve. Additionally, it was learned that even with a COBB Accessport, these upgrades demanded more fuel so owners would result to a more powerful fuel pump such as the DeatschWerks DW300 Fuel Pump. And yes, the 2006 STI was the model used in the Legendary Ken Block’s first Gymkhana video.
